Zerkegem is part of the municipality of Jabbeke (together with the villages of Snellegem, Stalhille and Varsenare). Already in 765 , the site is listed under the name Sirigoheim . Traces of a Celtic cemetery were found and in 867 the "Villa of Zerkegem" belonged to the abbey of St. Vaast in the South Flemish Atrecht (now the northern French city of Arras) .
Immediately adjacent to Zerkegem is Oudenburg with attractions including the Roman Archeological Museum as the 1000 -year-old Romanesque church of Ettelgem. Nice stop when hiking, cycling or driving in Oudenburg: The Spanish Toll House. Also possibility to kayak.
